A familiar and trusted surgeon in Western North Carolina, Colin Bird, MD, is joining AdventHealth to help expand access to specialized colorectal and surgical oncology care. Known throughout the region for his expertise and compassionate approach to care, Dr. Bird brings more than a decade of experience serving patients in Western North Carolina. In his new role as Medical Director of Surgical Oncology, he will continue providing colorectal surgical care while helping guide the development and growth of AdventHealth’s surgical oncology services across the region.

Dr. Bird specializes in the treatment of conditions affecting the colon, rectum and anus, including colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and hemorrhoids. He completed a colorectal surgery fellowship at the University of Texas Houston Medical Center and is board certified in both Colon and Rectal Surgery and General Surgery.

For Dr. Bird, every patient interaction begins with a simple principle: do the right thing for the patient.

“Nobody wants to come see a colorectal surgeon. I understand that. Patients often come to see me during difficult and uncomfortable times in their lives. My job isn't simply to treat a diagnosis or perform an operation. My job is to take care of the person sitting in front of me, preserve their dignity and help them through the process with as much compassion and clarity as possible."

Dr. Bird said one of the things that attracted him to AdventHealth was the opportunity to grow a surgical program allowing for further specialty care in surgical oncology designed around the needs of patients and their families.

"This is an opportunity to create something that is truly patient-first. Whether someone is facing cancer or another colorectal condition, they deserve timely access to care, clear communication and a team that is focused on making the process easier. That's what we're working to build."

As Medical Director of Surgical Oncology, Dr. Bird will serve as a key clinical leader as AdventHealth continues expanding services and preparing for future growth throughout Western North Carolina, including the development of services at AdventHealth Weaverville, which is under construction.

“Dr. Bird will be an important part of our work to expand surgical oncology care in North Carolina,” said Christy Sneller, Chief Operating Officer for AdventHealth Medical Group North Carolina. “His experience, his commitment to patient dignity and his focus on making care more accessible will be a real benefit to patients and referring providers alike.”

Dr. Bird earned his medical degree from Texas Tech School of Medicine, completed his general surgery residency at the University of North Carolina Hospitals and his fellowship program at the University of Texas at Houston.
