Inspired by the timeless ritual of mahjong and the allure of hidden lounges, The Velvet Wind reimagines the game in a modern, immersive setting. Guests settle into plush velvet seating surrounded by warm ambient lighting, lush botanicals, and a carefully curated aesthetic that encourages both focus and conversation. 

The lounge is owned and operated by five Asheville women — Natalie Dierkes, Lynn Roberts, Kimberly Moore, Michelle Drake, and Myra Hensley.

“We wanted to create a space where people could slow down, engage, and enjoy something tactile and meaningful,” said co-owner Natalie Dierkes. “Mahjong has always been about community, and we’ve elevated that into an experience that feels both intimate and unforgettable.” 

The Velvet Wind offers monthly lessons, daily open play, and a rotating calendar of events, making it equally welcoming to first-timers and veteran players. Guests can enjoy beer, wine, and prosecco on tap alongside light snacks, coffee, and tea — everything needed to settle in and stay awhile.
