Public Health Coordination Call Set for Jan. 13

Jan 07, 2026 06:37PM ● By WNC Business

Buncombe County Public Health will conduct a Public Health Coordination Call at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13 to discuss the increase in infectious diseases both nationwide and in our community and how businesses can help stop the spread of these potentially dangerous illnesses and protect our most vulnerable populations.

The virtual coordination call will include several speakers, including Dr. Ellis Matheson (Public Health Director), Dr. Jennifer Mullendore (Medical Director), and additional public health officials

Cases of measles have recently been confirmed in the County for the first time in decades.  Additionally, varicella (chickenpox) is circulating widely in local communities, and pertussis (whooping cough) continues to rise, with reported cases in 2025 surpassing those in 2024. This is all happening while respiratory illnesses such as the flu, RSV, and COVID are also increasing.

Discussion topics will include updates on the status of the spread of infectious diseases, what the County is doing in response, how these developments may impact local businesses, and guidelines for prevention and preparedness as well as response.

There will also be an opportunity for questions and discussion.
