The Transylvania County Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lisa Fletcher as the new Superintendent of Schools. She will succeed Dr. Jeff McDaris as Superintendent, who is retiring after serving 14 years as Superintendent and 40 years as an educator in North Carolina.
A native of Western North Carolina, Dr. Fletcher grew up in the Culberson area and attended Cherokee County Schools as a child. Growing up in a military family, she lived and attended schools in Fort Riley, Kansas, and Neu Ulm Germany, before returning to North Carolina to graduate from Hiwassee Dam High School.
Dr. Fletcher has over 20 years of education experience in the Cherokee County Schools. After working as an Assistant Finance Officer for Cherokee County, Dr. Fletcher began her career in education as a Business Education teacher at Murphy High School, in Murphy, North Carolina. She later served as the school’s Assistant Principal for 7 years, when the school was named a School of Distinction and Honors School of Excellence. Dr. Fletcher has also served as the school district’s Career and Technical Education Coordinator, and in 2015, was named Principal at Andrews High School in Andrews, North Carolina. Under her leadership, Andrews High School initiated several new academic initiatives, significantly increasing academic performance and helping reduce the school’s dropout rate.
Over the past several years, Dr. Fletcher has received recognition for her leadership, including being voted the Cherokee County Principal of the Year in 2018 and 2020. Most recently, Dr. Fletcher has worked as the Director of High School Curriculum in Cherokee County Schools, overseeing district-wide textbook adoption, as well as curriculum development for all high school students, while also serving as the Principal at Murphy High School in Murphy, North Carolina since 2021.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Fletcher as the next Superintendent of the Transylvania County Schools,” said Tawny McCoy, Chair of the Board of Education. “Dr. Fletcher is an experienced leader, with a breadth of knowledge and longstanding ties to Western North Carolina. We look forward to working together toward the continued success of all school staff and students in the Transylvania County community.”
“I’m honored and excited to serve the people of Transylvania County as the next Superintendent,” said Dr. Fletcher. “The school district has a rich tradition of academic achievement. I hope to further that tradition by working closely with students, parents, community members, as well as our incredible school staff and professional educators to bring out the best in each student.”
Dr. Fletcher earned her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Montreat College. She holds a Masters in Education and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Western Carolina University. Dr. Fletcher is also a member of the North Carolina Association of School Administrators (NCASA).
Dr. Fletcher will begin her leadership role as Superintendent with Transylvania County Schools on July 1, 2023.
