From the American Civil War, the Flood of 1916, the Spanish Flu, the Great Depression, Suburbanization, and the Great Recession, Asheville has an amazing history of resiliency in the face of dire moments in its history. This program will explore the historical context of Asheville’s resiliency and how business and community leaders can take inspiration from the past as we develop a post-Pandemic future. Special attention will be given to the Asheville’s transformation during its renaissance (1985-2015), and how we can build upon those successes as we craft a new era for our Mountain Metropolis.

Looking at our past, what are the leadership opportunities for individuals and organizations as we move into Asheville’s third century? What are the leadership qualities and community structures needed that can support our work moving forward?

Dr. Kevan Frazier is the head of Western Carolina University’s Programs in Asheville located in Biltmore Park. An historian of Asheville and former history professor, Kevan lectures regularly on the history of our community and has been featured on public television and C-span. Kevan is an active member of the small business community in Asheville as the co-owner of Well Played Board Game Cafe, Asheville Brewery Tours, and Asheville by Foot Walking Tours.
