Blue Ridge to Launch Outdoor Leadership Training Program in January 2027

Nov 02, 2026 11:46AM ● By WNC Business
Beginning in January 2027, Blue Ridge Community College will offer an Outdoor Leadership program designed to help participants turn their interest in outdoor recreation into professional opportunities.

The program comes at a time when outdoor recreation is growing across North Carolina and the surrounding region.

In 2024, North Carolina ranked eighth among all states in outdoor recreation employment, with 155,462 jobs in the sector. In Western North Carolina, outdoor recreation generates approximately $4.9 billion in economic output.

Blue Ridge’s Outdoor Leadership program prepares participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to pursue careers in outdoor recreation.

As part of the new program, students will receive classroom instruction and hands-on training in outdoor leadership, risk management, wilderness safety, navigation, and other areas. They will also learn about the business side of the outdoor industry, including marketing, contracts, and entrepreneurship. Participants will explore career pathways, and a 16-hour job shadowing experience will connect them with outdoor industry professionals.

Those who successfully complete the program will earn a Blue Ridge Community College Outdoor Leadership training certificate. Participants may also earn additional credentials through the American Safety & Health Institute and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

The 119 hour, January through May program is designed for individuals 16 and older, including recent high school graduates, college students, career changers, outdoor enthusiasts, and current recreation professionals seeking to develop their skills. Potential career settings include outdoor guide services, outfitters, recreation businesses and organizations offering hiking, fishing, paddling, cycling, and other outdoor experiences.

Blue Ridge will host a free Outdoor Careers Information Session on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 160 at the College’s Transylvania County Campus. The event will give prospective participants an opportunity to meet local guides and employers, learn about the program, and ask questions about careers in outdoor recreation.
