This fall, Blue Ridge Community College has received the State Auditor’s Award of Excellence from the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor for its financial statement audit for the 2025 fiscal year.

The award recognizes organizations that demonstrate exceptional financial management, accountability, and responsible stewardship of public resources. Recipients must meet rigorous eligibility criteria, including timely financial reporting, no significant audit adjustments, no reportable audit findings, and full cooperation throughout the audit process.

“This award is reserved for organizations that distinguish themselves through exceptional financial management, accountability, and commitment to the highest standards of public stewardship,” the State Auditor’s September 28 letter stated.

Blue Ridge’s vice president for finance and chief financial officer, Carolyn W. Alley, MBA, credited the work of the College’s Finance team for helping achieve this recognition, emphasizing that accurate financial reporting depends on the collective efforts of employees across the department to maintain well-organized, accurate, and error-free records of financial transactions. The Finance team members recognized for their contributions include Carolyn W. Alley, Courtney B. Edney, Connie Williams, Melissa Baron, Nikolas Mitchell, Sharon Howell, Margo Pugliese, Christine Tobbe, and Jacey Rhoades.

“Blue Ridge Community College is committed to the prudent and responsible stewardship of its financial resources,” said Alley. “The College, guided by our Board of Trustees and its Finance Committee, upholds the highest standards of ethical decision-making, transparency, and accountability in support of its institutional mission.”

Alley also highlighted the key roles Edney and Williams played in preparing the College’s financial statements.

The State Auditor’s letter noted that the College’s efforts distinguish it among state agencies, universities, and community colleges across North Carolina. The award recognizes entities that meet strict eligibility criteria for financial statement and federal compliance audits.

Blue Ridge President Dr. Laura B. Leatherwood praised the College’s Finance team for its exemplary service.

“I’m incredibly proud of our institution and the team that oversees our finances,” she said. “Responsible financial stewardship allows us to invest in our students and employees, our programs, and the resources needed to build a competitive workforce. This recognition reflects the College’s commitment to accountability and integrity as we prepare students for success and support our region’s economic future.”
