A planned luxury condominium development in
downtown Asheville has three top-floor penthouses under contract at
close to $4.5 million each, a figure that would represent the highest
announced for a residential condominium project in the city.
Churchill, the condominium building planned for a half acre lot on 161
Church St. in Asheville’s South Slope district, was originally designed
with 44 residences but will now include 37.
“The change is due to a larger than expected demand for three bedroom units,” said George Hining, project developer.
Overall, unit prices are expected to range from about $1.3 million to $4.5 million, with over 25% of the building now under contract. The building is planned for Church Street near Green Man Brewery, Banks Avenue and other restaurants and businesses in the South Slope district, one of the city’s fastest-growing areas for restaurants, breweries and residential development.
At 10 stories tall, Churchill is expected to be the tallest building in the South Slope neighborhood and the seventh tallest building in downtown Asheville. Plans for the building include an occupied green roof, owner’s sky lounge, a grand lobby, private gym with sauna, a state of the art golf simulator, and two owner's lounges. Hining said the residences are designed for “unparalleled luxury” and are attracting interest from buyers all over the country seeking second homes in the mountains as well as locals looking for a low-maintenance lifestyle downtown. The wooded setting along Church Street was a major draw for the development, Hining said. West-facing units will overlook a neighboring forested area, placing many residences within the surrounding tree canopy, while south-facing units overlook the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Design elements also reflect the project’s connection to the site. Plans include natural materials such as marble, stone and wood incorporated throughout the residences and common areas. Hining said the residences are expected to break ground before the end of the year with completion by mid 2028.
