Mountain Community Online School (MCOS), a fully remote, tuition-free public charter school for students in grades 4 through 8, is now enrolling statewide for the 2026–2027 academic year.
Launched by The Mountain Community School (TMCS), a North Carolina charter school with more than 25 years of experience, the new online program reflects a broader shift in how educators and families are thinking about what school can be, and when it works best.
For Executive Director Jeff Morris, the idea did not begin with a model. It began with conversations.
Over the years, Morris has met with families whose children were capable, curious, and engaged, but not always well served by the structure of a traditional school day. Some were struggling to keep pace. Others were not challenged. Many were simply trying to balance the realities of family life with the demands of school.
“School should open horizons, not limit opportunities,” Morris said. Those experiences led to a larger question: how can public education better meet students where they are, without asking them to fit into a single model?
Mountain Community Online School is one answer to that question.
Designed to combine the flexibility of online learning with the structure and support of a traditional public charter school, MCOS offers live, teacher-led instruction, personalized academic support, and a dedicated Success Coach for every student.
It is not a self-paced or isolated learning model. Instead, it is designed to provide accountability, connection, and consistency while allowing students greater flexibility in how they structure their day.
That flexibility can be especially important during the middle school years. As students begin to discover their interests and identities, they are also navigating rising academic expectations, social pressures, and an increasing number of extracurricular commitments. For many families, the pace and rigidity of a traditional school schedule can leave little room for balance.
“Middle school students are trying to figure out who they want to be,” Morris said. “They are under a tremendous amount of pressure.” MCOS is designed to create space during that time not just for academic growth but also for exploration, creativity, and real-world experiences.
Students can engage in their coursework while also pursuing athletics, the arts, travel, or other interests that are often difficult to accommodate within a traditional school schedule.
The model also reflects the school’s long-standing emphasis on experiential learning. For more than two decades, TMCS has encouraged students to learn through hands-on experiences, outdoor education, and engagement with the world around them. That philosophy continues in the online environment.
“We want kids to experience the world,” Morris said. “Learning comes alive when it is experienced, not just assigned.”
As a statewide public charter school, MCOS is open to eligible students across North Carolina. While enrollment is open statewide, school leaders note that the model may be especially relevant in regions such as Western North Carolina, where families often face limited access to charter school options and where homeschooling communities continue to grow.
MCOS may be a strong fit for families seeking a more flexible daily schedule, a structured alternative to homeschooling, or a more personalized learning environment for their child.
Enrollment is limited.
