Blue Ridge Community College will offer three new, free sessions of the Level Up: Core Construction program this summer, providing flexible training options for individuals seeking to enter or advance in the construction field.

The new sessions will begin May 19, June 8, and June 9, with courses scheduled on different days of the week, including an evening option to accommodate working adults.

Level Up: Core Construction is a short-term training program designed to equip students with foundational skills needed for careers in the construction industry. Participants gain hands-on experience and industry-relevant knowledge that can lead to employment opportunities or further training in specialized trades.

The program is offered at no cost to students, thanks to generous grants from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and the Lowe’s Foundation. Upon completion, students also receive a professional-grade toolkit to support their transition directly onto the job site.

"This program is built to give you real, job-ready skills,” said Jason Baxley, Blue Ridge’s skilled trade and advanced manufacturing instructor. “You’ll learn the core fundamentals of construction and skilled trades, including safety, tool use, construction math, blueprint reading, and hands-on techniques across multiple trades like electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and carpentry."

Launched in the months following Hurricane Helene with support from NCCER, Level Up helps strengthen the local construction workforce and support ongoing rebuilding and recovery efforts across the region. It is designed to help community members launch or advance careers in a critical professional field.

The program is part of Blue Ridge’s ongoing effort to meet regional workforce demands by preparing students for high-demand, high-skill careers. With multiple scheduling options, the College aims to increase accessibility for individuals balancing work and other commitments.

Baxley explained that Level Up: Core Construction is a career investment with long-term rewards.

"For many, it’s the difference between working a job and building a future,” he added.

“Graduates leave with skills they can take directly into the workforce, opportunities to connect with employers, and the foundation to grow into higher-paying, specialized roles. If you’re serious about learning something that translates into real income and long-term stability, this is where that starts."

Registration is now open for all upcoming sessions. For more information or to register, applicants may visit www.blueridge.edu/level-up. Applicants are instructed to choose “Apply Scholarship” during the online registration process to ensure the course fee is waived.

In December, Blue Ridge celebrated 2025 graduates of the Level Up: Core Construction program during a ceremony, recognizing students who successfully completed the training and are now prepared to enter the workforce.
