YMCA of WNC Approaching Major Milestone Combating Food Insecurity

As communities across the country recognize National Nutrition Month in March, the YMCA of Western North Carolina is approaching a major milestone in its effort to combat food insecurity across the region.

Since launching its food distribution efforts, the Y has distributed 1,937,671 pounds of food to individuals and families across Western North Carolina. In February 2026 alone, 31,136 pounds of food were distributed through the Y’s community food programs.

Through its Mobile Food Markets, the YMCA brings free, healthy food directly to neighborhoods where access to nutritious groceries can be limited. These markets provide fresh produce and staple items to community members while helping remove transportation and affordability barriers.

“Access to healthy food is foundational to community health,” said Ashley Tee, Executive Director of Community Health for the YMCA of Western North Carolina. “Through our Mobile Food Markets, we’re meeting people where they are and ensuring families across our region have access to nutritious options that support their well-being.”

The growing need for food assistance has increased significantly in recent years due to COVID-19, Hurricane Helene, and ongoing economic pressures, which have made it more difficult for many families to access affordable, healthy food.

Food distribution efforts are part of the YMCA’s social responsibility work, which focuses on strengthening communities and ensuring people have the support they need to thrive.

The YMCA’s Mobile Food Markets are made possible thanks to private donors, community partnerships, and grant funding, which allow the organization to continue expanding access to healthy food throughout Western North Carolina.

At its current pace, the YMCA projects reaching 2 million pounds of food distributed sometime in late spring or early summer of 2026—a milestone that reflects both the growing need in the community and the power of collaborative support.
