Mar 06, 2026 04:40PM ● By WNC BusinessThe Republic Services Charitable Foundation and Republic Services Inc., today announced that Haywood Habitat for Humanity is receiving a $250,000 donation from the 2026 National Neighborhood Promise grant. The funding will support constructing a nature walking path and play area connecting the organization’s Chestnut Park neighborhood to the adjacent community.
Haywood Habitat for Humanity builds and preserves safe, affordable homes in partnership with low- and very low-income families across Haywood County. Through volunteer-driven construction, community collaboration and long-term affordability models, the organization provides pathways to stability and homeownership for residents who might otherwise be priced out of the area. In addition to housing, Haywood Habitat invests in strengthening neighborhood environments by supporting projects that improve outdoor spaces, promote connectivity, and foster a greater sense of community belonging.
Haywood Habitat for Humanity is one of 14 nonprofit organizations to receive a 2026 National Neighborhood Promise grant. The Republic Services Charitable Foundation’s National Neighborhood Promise program supports nonprofit organizations in communities where Republic Services customers and employees live and work. To date, more than 14 million people across North America have benefited from the program.
"This project reflects what's possible when a community comes together around shared values,” said Jared Iraggi, executive director for Haywood Habitat for Humanity. “The Chestnut Park civic space will be a true community asset; a place for connection, gathering, love and shared experience. We are incredibly grateful for the Republic Services Charitable Foundation's investment in Western North Carolina and for their belief in our organization.”
In addition to the grant, local Republic Services team members will volunteer alongside Haywood Habitat for Humanity to support revitalization projects in Chestnut Park that include plating native trees, shrubs and flowers and constructing a play area and walking path.
“Republic Services is honored to partner with Haywood Habitat for Humanity to support the revitalization of Chestnut Park,” said Steve Slater, general manager at Republic Services. “This project will help create a safer, greener, and more vibrant community space. Together, we’re building a welcoming and environmentally responsible public area that everyone can enjoy.”
