From the online classroom to the camera to a statewide stage, aspiring entrepreneurs across North Carolina are invited to compete for up to $30,000 in unrestricted startup funds through a new statewide pitch competition offered through the North Carolina Small Business Center Network (SBCN) funded by the Wells Fargo Foundation.

The competition is open to entrepreneurs with a new business concept who are ready to turn an idea into action. Participants selected for the program will receive structured training, expert mentorship, professional pitch experience, and statewide exposure—culminating in a live Pitch Day and public voting period.

“This program is designed to meet entrepreneurs where they are and give them the tools, confidence, and visibility they need to launch strong businesses,” Vicki Ashley, HCC Small Business Center Director said. “It’s not just about funding—it’s about building a statewide community of innovators.”

Program Highlights

  • Statewide Reach: Open to applicants from all 58 North Carolina community college service areas.
  • Training & Mentorship: Selected participants complete the REAL Entrepreneurship Pitch It! program, an eight-session, online, multi-instructor-led course focused on business planning and presentation skills.
  • New Business Focus: Pitches must represent a new venture not formally established prior to the first night of class.
  • Professional Pitch Experience: Finalists present live during Pitch Day in the Triangle area, with professional video crews recording each pitch for statewide social media voting.
  • Funding & Recognition: Competitors vie for $30,000 in unrestricted startup funds and statewide recognition through the Small Business Center Network.
  • Community Impact: Participants gain exposure, expert feedback, and connections with mentors, peers, and partners across North Carolina.

Eligible applicants must submit an online application, a short video (no more than three minutes), required letters of recommendation, and documentation of at least three hours of business counseling through a local Small Business Center (or an approved statewide webinar).

Following regional review panels, 16 entrepreneurs—two from each of the state’s eight regions—will be selected to participate in the program. Invitations will be issued April 24, 2026.

The eight-session REAL Entrepreneurship Pitch It! program runs May 12 through July 7, 2026, followed by submission of final business plans and pitch decks. Pitch Day is tentatively scheduled for August 8, 2026, with statewide voting taking place September 1–15, 2026.

Top competitors will be awarded:
