Each spring, the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce presents the ATHENA Leadership Award at the Professional Women’s Luncheon. This prestigious honor recognizes a leader who demonstrates excellence in their profession, makes a meaningful impact in the community, and actively supports women in reaching their full leadership potential.

Origins of the ATHENA Award

The ATHENA Leadership Award is named for the Greek goddess of wisdom and victory. Established in 1982 by Martha Mertz, founder of ATHENA International, the program has recognized more than 8,000 leaders—both women and men—in hundreds of cities across eleven countries. Its mission is to celebrate leaders who inspire others, especially women, to achieve professional success and embrace leadership.

The award was introduced locally to Henderson County in 2008 by Vanessa Y. Mintz, an eighth-generation Henderson County native, businesswoman, Chamber volunteer, and community advocate. Mintz embodied the values of ATHENA International by working tirelessly to strengthen communities, empower women, and support families. After her passing in 2011, the award has continued in her honor, with her daughters serving as Legacy Members of the planning committee.

Past recipients include women who have shaped Henderson County in significant ways. The most recent winner, Rebecca McCall (2025), was recognized for her work in disaster recovery, workforce development, and mentoring initiatives.

What Makes an ATHENA Recipient

Nominees are evaluated on three key criteria:

  • Demonstrating excellence, creativity, and initiative in their profession

  • Providing valuable service that improves quality of life in the community

  • Actively assisting women in achieving their full leadership potential

Recipients are also expected to embody the Eight Principles of Enlightened Leadership™: living authentically, learning constantly, building relationships, fostering collaboration, acting courageously, advocating fiercely, giving back, and celebrating life’s milestones.

How to Apply

Nominations are open to individuals who live or work in Henderson County and are at least 21 years old. Applications must include:

  • A completed nomination form (typed applications strongly encouraged)

  • Up to two pages of supporting documents (such as a résumé or CV)

  • A high-resolution headshot of the nominee

Completed nomination packets should be submitted to the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce by email at [email protected] or by mail to 204 Kanuga Road, Hendersonville, NC 28739.

A selection committee composed of leaders from outside the community reviews nominations and selects the recipient. The award will be presented at the 2026 Business & Professional Women’s Luncheon on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Blue Ridge Community College.

A Lasting Legacy

More than just an accolade, the ATHENA Award continues the legacy of Vanessa Y. Mintz and serves as a reminder that leadership is about service, courage, and empowerment. By honoring those who uplift others, the award strengthens Henderson County and inspires future leaders.
