On Sept. 19, one day ahead of the greater community’s Hunger Walk at Jackson Park, residents, staff, students, and neighbors joined forces on Carolina Village’s campus to raise $47,105 for the Henderson County Hunger Coalition (HCHC).
The Hunger Walk has deep roots at Carolina Village, tracing back to resident Louise Randel’s vision more than four decades ago. This year’s walk honored that legacy while showcasing its growth: from the joyful steps of 5th and 6th graders from FernLeaf Community Charter School, who had led their own Hunger Walk fundraising, to the inspiring participation of five of the Village’s nine centenarians.
But the spirit of the event extended far beyond the walking path. In the week leading up to the fundraiser, participants toured Fishes & Loaves food pantry in Etowah, connected directly with agencies supported by HCHC, and came together for lively events like a chili cook-off (won by resident Jeanette Taws’ chicken chili), art auctions, and community raffles.
Last year, Carolina Village donations made up nearly a third of HCHC’s annual budget. This year, the Village set a new record, surpassing last year’s fundraising by more than $14,000.
