Made in WNC: Cane Creek Cycling Celebrates 30 Years in WNC

The company’s story in Fletcher dates back even further than its name. “In 1974, a Japanese company called Dia-Compe came here and started to build this facility that we are currently in,” O’Malley said. “They chose Fletcher because of the gas crisis that was happening in the ’70s, and they wanted to be close to the American bicycle market.” The facility was carefully positioned along rail lines that could access the central and eastern US.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Dia-Compe served as a key supplier for major U.S. bike brands like Schwinn and Huffy, while also manufacturing innovative components, including one of the first mountain bike suspension forks. In 1992, management bought the company from Japanese ownership, leading to the creation of Dia-Compe USA, which introduced the game-changing threadless headset.
“What really put Cane Creek on the map was the headset,” said O’Malley. “It revolutionized how bicycles were made... We held the patent for that for 20 years.”
This innovation led to the creation of the Cane Creek brand in 1995, and within a year, the entire company rebranded as Cane Creek Cycling Components.
Over the past 30 years, Cane Creek has expanded into all cycling segments, innovating products like the Thudbuster seatpost, twin tube shocks, eeWings titanium cranks, and the Tigon shock, continuing to drive cycling technology forward. The 30-year anniversary is a formal one for the name, but Cane Creek has been developing and growing for much longer. “We’ve been an ongoing bicycle component company for 50 years,” says O’Malley, “but we’ve only been called Cane Creek for 30.”
Despite remarkable growth in their product line, the company remains small and nimble. Cane Creek has 40 employees. By comparison, SRAM Components, a bicycle component manufacturer based in Chicago, Illinois, has about 3,500.
That smaller size has allowed Cane Creek to keep innovation close to home. “We have a great little lab in our facility, and we do all our prototypes in-house,” said O’Malley. The in-house prototypes allow for quicker, more affordable feedback on a given idea for a product.
Cane Creek’s WNC location has been advantageous for maintaining a workforce. “We never have a problem filling a position,” O’Malley said. “Even during the pandemic, when I know a lot of manufacturing facilities in Henderson County were struggling to have workers, that was never a Cane Creek issue.”
O’Malley attributes that to both the appeal of the region and the company’s culture, adding that they have a number of employees who work at Cane Creek as part of their semi-retirement. “We have a few people that are like, I’ve done my career, I want to come and do something fun,” she said.
To mark its 30th anniversary, Cane Creek launched a special colorway—Cane Creek Blue—and opened a new public-facing Experience Center. The Experience Center features a 26-foot wall showcasing some of the company’s products from 1975 to current day.
The center serves multiple purposes: part museum, part test lab, and part community space. “We have a program called Test and Tune,” said O’Malley. “One of our employees will take your bike, put on a rear shock, go out and ride with you, show you how to test it and tune it to your riding style.”
While components are assembled in Fletcher, many materials are sourced globally. “We bring in [parts] and then we hand-assemble,” said O’Malley. That hands-on approach is still a powerful draw for visitors, who can tour the facility. “It's very interesting for people to see the hand assembly—the guys out there with these teeny tiny little parts, and they're putting 120 parts into a front fork.”
Looking forward, Cane Creek is focused on continued innovation despite global challenges. “We’re looking for stabilization from tariffs,” O’Malley said. But she’s optimistic: “We’re hoping there’s another 30 coming.”
Cane Creek’s story is deeply tied to its mountain home. “There’s really no better place around to test the products,” O’Malley said.
