Black Mountain PTO and Pisgah Brewing to host ‘Vibes for the Valley’ concert

May 22, 2024 08:36AM ● By WNC Business
ASHEVILLE –  Black Mountain Schools PTO, the Parent-Teacher Organization of Black Mountain Primary and Black Mountain Elementary Schools, and Pisgah Brewing, WNC’s organic microbrewery and music venue, is announcing the first-ever Vibes for the Valley, a benefit concert for the schools’ afterschool programs. The concert will feature Scott McMicken & THE EVER-EXPANDING, Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters, and Hannah Kaminer & The Wistfuls, and will take place at the outdoor stage at Pisgah Brewing. The concert will also feature a silent auction with items from local artists and businesses, with all proceeds from the silent auction going to the Black Mountain Afterschool Programs.

Vibes for the Valley benefit concert is jointly organized by the Black Mountain Schools PTO and Pisgah Brewing. All funds Raised by Vibes for the Valley Benefit Concert are to support compensating educators and facilitate a robust offering of afterschool clubs and programs at Black Mountain public schools. The biggest barrier to offering afterschool clubs is incentivizing educators to run programs by offering them compensation for their time.

At the Black Mountain Primary and Black Mountain Elementary Schools, which are designated as Title I schools, past afterschool programs have included clubs like Garden Club, Math, Instrument Lessons, Science, Eco-Explorers, Chess, Parks & Rec Club, Yearbook, and Town Government Club. Currently there isn’t sufficient funding for the afterschool programs, so the PTO is raising money to pay the teachers who choose to lead the programs.

After working with the Buncombe County School System to allow them to pay teachers to run the programs, the Black Mountain Schools PTO has already run a successful pilot program with three teachers during the 2023-2024 school year: a Science Club, led by Ashley Styles (a 2023-2024 Buncombe County Schools Teacher of the Year), a Reading Club, led by Laura Josey (a 2024-2025 Buncombe County Schools Teacher of the Year), and a Chess Club, led by Marcia Tucci (the 2022-2023 Buncombe County Schools AIG Specialist of the Year).

Individuals and businesses who are interested in co-sponsoring the event or donating to the silent auction should contact Frank Cappelli and the team at [email protected]
