Blowing Rock Community Library turns 100

May 02, 2023 06:00PM ● By WNC Business

It was 100 years ago that through the efforts of a group of ambitious and energetic women, a public library and reading room was first established in Blowing Rock. The early library was stocked with donations the women solicited from friends and other libraries throughout the country. Over the next twenty-five years the library was located in the Blowing Rock School and several other buildings on Main Street. Then at the end of 1948, a building committee was organized and by 1950 the existing library on Main Street was completed.

Currently the library houses over 10,000 volumes for adults and another 3,000 for children. Each month the latest bestsellers are added to the collection. Library cards are free for any resident of Watauga or Caldwell counties and the library welcomes visitors Monday through Saturday, 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM from mid-May through mid-October and similar hours on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday during the winter.

Anyone interested in joining the Blowing Rock Community Library Association should contact the library at [email protected] or stop in at 1022 Main Street, Blowing Rock. Monthly meetings are held May through October and focus on projects and activities to maintain and improve the library.
