Hendersonville – Orthopedic surgeon, Amal Das M.D., was recognized at the December meeting of the Pardee UNC Health Care Board of Directors for his years of service and dedication to hip and knee replacement. Dr. Das is retiring from Southeastern Sports Medicine and Orthopedics, a department of Pardee Hospital on Dec. 31, 2022, after more than 30 years of service to the community.

Dr. Das joined the medical staff at Pardee Hospital in 1989 and has been a leading voice on arthritis and joint replacement and reconstruction for more than three decades. He served as the Chair of the Pardee Department of Surgery from 2004 to 2005 and was instrumental in establishing the Pardee Center for Joint Replacement in 1999. In addition to newspapers across the US citing his research, Dr. Das wrote the foreword to the number one New York Times bestseller, “The Arthritis Cure.” He also authored several groundbreaking academic papers on complex hip revision, glucosamine, and chondroitin sulfate treatment for knee arthritis. Over the course of his career, Dr. Das has performed more than 8,000 hip and knee replacements.

Dr. Das has led courses all across the country on hip and knee replacement for physicians, including as chairperson for a minimally invasive knee replacement course at Pardee. He has designed surgical instruments including a complete set for the anterior approach to the hip which is marketed nationally by Innomed. His work with Congressman Charles Taylor of North Carolina on discrepancies in government reimbursement of hip and knee replacement surgeries helped usher in the cost containment movement in American medicine today.

Dr. Das attended medical school at Indiana University and did his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a fellowship in hip replacement at the Ohio State University. He is a board-certified member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
