HENDERSONVILLE – Southeastern Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, a department of Pardee Hospital, is expanding its orthopedic services with the addition of Matthew Wham, M.D. a sports medicine physician and orthopedic surgeon. Having trained with Harvard surgeons and helping to take care of the New England Patriots football team, and professional soccer players, Dr. Wham brings new, specialized expertise in sports medicine to Western North Carolina.

Dr. Wham believes in individualized patient care, shared decision-making, and informed healthcare delivery. “The answer for how to treat your neighbor’s shoulder pain might not be the same for how to treat yours,” he explained. “It’s that individualized care that makes my job fun.” He adds that his favorite part of his job is helping people get back to doing the things they enjoy, “Whether it is returning to athletics or playing with grandchildren in the backyard, I get to help my patients enjoy and maintain their quality of life, and I find that very gratifying.”

Dr. Wham earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. He completed his internship and residency training in orthopedic surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. “My training with professional athletes gives me a unique perspective to providing patient care,” Dr. Wham added. “It’s not just about being in pain but it’s allowing your body to perform at its highest potential – whether you’re 18 or 80.”

In his free time, Dr. Wham enjoys backpacking, fly fishing, golf and disc golf, flying airplanes, and spending time with his wife and dog. Dr. Wham is accepting new patients, to schedule an appointment call (828) 274-4555.
