Go Local Asheville

Go Local Asheville has selected an owl (pictured) for their new mascot. Owls are common in Western North Carolina with five resident species. Owls can be symbolic of intuition, wisdom, observation, power, protection, and intelligence. Even though their characteristic wide eyes are immobile on their head, they have keen depth perception and good binocular vision. To account for the immobility of the eyes, owls are able to turn their heads extremely far in either direction. The owl's symbolism and unique adaptability makes this the perfect mascot to represent the local independent business community according to Go Local.

The 2023 mascot palette also has a new color - pink. Go Local has traditionally used brand colors of red, white, and black. Pink was added to represent vibrancy, the word most commonly used in the company's business member and cardholder surveys to describe the community. The new logo and mascot was created by Jenny Greer Fares of Sound Mind Design.

In a recent survey, Go Local cardholders said
they'd like participating businesses to display their Go Local membership so it is easier for them to be found. This year, business members will not only receive a cling for their windows or doors saying the card is "Honored Here" but will also receive an additional cling designed by Fares signifying that they are a "Proud Member of Go Local." Cling designs will also be sent to business members digitally for use on the business's website, e-commerce site, or social media.

Another change is how Go Local donates to area schools. Through 2022, the company donated 50 percent of Go Local card revenue to
Asheville City Schools and the Asheville City School Foundation. This year, they have donated nearly $40,000 to our public schools, bringing the grand total to over $200,000.

Beginning in 2023, Go Local will be giving each school 100 free Go Local cards to use for fundraising activities at the individual schools. This change will give each school the opportunity to raise $2,000. Understanding this is new to many school coordinators, Go Local is developing a playbook
that each school will receive with fundraising ideas, tips, graphics, and examples to help them sell the cards. In addition, the company will donate 25 percent of the proceeds from 2023 card revenue. This change in donation methods will allow Go Local to better support the business community while giving area schools the opportunity to receive as much or more funds from card sales.
