Nine Mile launches brewery at Montford location

ASHEVILLE – Nine Mile, the Asheville restaurant group serving Caribbean-fusion cuisine, announced the launch of their brewery with the release of four new beers, now available at all three Nine Mile locations (Montford, West Asheville, and South Asheville). Nine Mile Brewing is headquartered at the restaurant’s original location in Montford (233 Montford Avenue).

Nine Mile invites the public to the official launch of the new brewery at their Montford location on Wednesday, February 28, beginning at 4:00 PM. In celebration of the launch, the first 100 guests will receive a limited-edition Nine Mile Brewing pint glass.

The driving force behind the new brewery is Aaron Thomas, Head Chef and one of four co-owners of Nine Mile. “This brewery is about combining our love of flavor with our love of beer. We wanted to develop a range of our own unique craft beers to complement the full menu. It’s been a journey and we’re grateful to our community for helping us get this far. The day that we enlisted a bunch of firefighters to help us move the equipment is going to live in my memory for a long time!”

In charge of the brewing itself is head brewer Evan Boose, a longtime Nine Mile team member. Boose started at Nine Mile in 2018 and worked his way up from prep cook to kitchen manager, then apprenticed with several Asheville brewers to develop his brewing skills. In May of last year, with Thomas’ blessing and with Nine Mile still paying his wages, Boose stepped out of the kitchen to study brewing full-time. He apprenticed with brewers Carl Melissas, Bert Menches, and Brian Bobo of The Wedge, with Matt Huntley of The Bier Garden, and at Catawba and Archetype Brewing. While Evan’s apprenticeships have concluded, the mentoring and camaraderie with other Asheville brewers is ongoing.

When asked about his brewing philosophy, Boose reflects, “Like cooking, brewing is a gift to the folks who are receiving it, so it’s about attention to detail and putting your heart into the process of creating every tasting note. The bitterness of really hoppy beers and the spiciness of our hotter dishes can really intensify each other, so we focused on beers that are refreshing, on the lighter side, and crushable.” Boose says that next up is a Brown Ale (a favorite style of co-owner Nate Ray) and a Czech-style Pilsner, and Nine Mile seltzers are also in the works.

While the Nine Mile team is still finalizing the selection of their flagship brews, they are currently serving four new beers at Montford:
  • Shale Pile Stout (5.5% ABV): This smooth and roasty stout originates from tropical regions and offers a blend of aromas and flavors of chocolate and molasses. Brewed with EKG hops, the Shale Pile is inspired by co-owner Aaron Thomas’ roots and upbringing in South Central Pennsylvania. (Suggested menu pairing: a new dish on the Nine Mile menu, Mount Zion)
  • Isabella Golden Ale (4.8% ABV): This easy drinking ale with Galaxy and Citra hops has a golden hue from the honey malt and offers a refreshing floral and citrusy finish. (Suggested menu pairing: Kingston 12)
  • Montford IPA (7.1% ABV):  This American-style IPA perfectly balances the bitterness and tropical flavors of El Dorado, Strata, and Azaca hops. (Suggested menu pairing: The Meshach)
  • Jose Llamas Mexican Lager (4.7% ABV): This crisp light lager is with flaked maize, a touch of caramel, and noble Saaz hops. Named after Jose Llamas, a former Nine Mile team member who was integral to the restaurant’s success for years and helped train Evan Boose in the lead sauté role. (Suggested menu pairing: The Nolan)\
Each of the four beers is available at all three Nine Mile locations at $7 per pint. Customers may also order “One Love” mini-growlers for $20 (with $10 refills of the 32 oz. container). The Isabella Golden Ale is also currently on tap at two other restaurants in town (Strada and Creekside Taphouse).
